In The Beginning. . .
Due to
the growing problem of Domestic Violence in Baraga County and plight of victims, a core group of volunteers first met on March 1, 1983. Because we believe there
is a need to provide immediate local services to abused women and their
children and to promote awareness
in Baraga County, the Baraga County Shelter Home, Inc. was formed.
Since that time, we have purchased our shelter through private donations, group contributions and various fund raising projects. Most importantly, we have provided resident and non-resident services to many abused women and children in Baraga County.
Domestic Violence is rooted in an antiquated sexist social structure that
produces profound inequities in the distribution of power and resources;
in the roles and relationships between men, women, and children in
families; and has devastating effects on victims, their children, and the
entire society. It is criminal conduct that cannot be tolerated.
A comprehensive community
response to domestic violence through education, advocacy, and appropriate
interventions is necessary to bring about change and end the violence.
Battering stops only when assailants are held accountable for their abuse.
